
Mr Ian Shepherd – Year 9 Dean
Mr Shepherd started teaching in England in 1989. His main roles in schools in the UK were Head of Year and Director of Student Support in inner city comprehensive schools. He migrated here in 2004. He has been in his present role as the Transition Dean for just over five years with his main responsibility being the day to day running of Year 9 and to support Year 9 Mentors and Students, so that they can THRIVE. He has taught many subjects in his twenty years at CHBC including Agriculture, Mathematics, Industrial Engineering Design and Information Computer Technology. He now teaches Science specialising in Chemistry and Biology.
He has supported extra-curricular activities in many areas including Volleyball, Basketball, Triathlon and Swimming, but has been mainly involved in Football coaching and managing teams.
Mrs Judy Shepherd – Year 10 Dean
Mrs Shepherd started working at CHBC 20 years ago as a new immigrant to New Zealand. She had previously been a Physical Education teacher, Dean and Assistant Principal at a large school in Gloucester England. Since joining CHBC in 2004, she has mostly taught English, Humanities and French.
She is currently Year 10 Dean and really enjoying building relationships with the students and parents of this cohort.
Both of her own children attended the College, enjoyed their time here and felt that the education they received, equipped them for future success and happiness. She feels very lucky to be surrounded by positive, enthusiastic young people who embrace and appreciate the outstanding opportunities available here.
Mr Andres Castelli – Assistant Junior Dean
Mr Castelli has taken on the Assistant Junior Dean role this year. He oversees assisting the Year 9 and 10 Deans with different tasks. These include organising activities with the Year 10 representatives and Mentor Group Representatives, following up with Junior students when necessary and checking how well students are doing with their Golden Crowns.
He is also a member of the Physical Education Department, where he is implementing the new Year 11 Achievement Standards. He has experience previously teaching French, Spanish, Social Studies, and Health as well as Physical Education in other schools.
This is his second year at Central Hawke’s Bay College, and he believes this school allows the students to have a fantastic experience, allowing them to open many doors to life.
Mrs Robyn Southward – Year 11 Dean
Mrs Robyn Southward is the Dean of Year 11. She has been teaching at the College since 2010 and in that time has taught Physical Education, Social Studies, Science, English as a Second Language (ESOL), and Pathways.
Her association with this school has been a long one, and one she is very proud of, having been a student here and then teaching Physical Education in the years from 1990- 1995.
She is currently SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), International Dean and Award Leader for The Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award.
Mrs Margie Breen – Year 12 Dean
Mrs Breen, Dean of Year 12 joined the College staff in 2017 and has been enjoying teaching Science with the motivated team led by Mr Oliver. Teaching in the community where Mrs Breen grew up has been particularly satisfying to her. The College is about community, and she has been proud of the achievement and opportunities that it has provided for students. Mrs Breen has a son who has recently left the College and a daughter in Year 12.
Mr James Fraser – Year 13 Dean
Mr Fraser is a former pupil of Central Hawkes Bay College, as well as having taught here in the early 2000’s, before heading away overseas.
He has been back for the last eight years and is currently the Year 13 Dean, as well as a Health and Physical Education teacher. He is also responsible for running the Peer Support program designed to help our new Year 9 students feel comfortable in their new school environment.
James has been involved in a number of different extracurricular activities in his time at the College and is now running the Lifesaving program.
