National Swimming Championship Success
Lucas Perceval and Paige Franklin recently swum at the New Zealand National Age Group Swimming Championship event held in Wellington from April 19th to 24th.
To be eligible to swim at this championship, swimmers must gain qualification times for each event for their age group. However, the last six months has been a difficult time for them to try and gain these times due to limited racing opportunities because of COVID restrictions. Therefore, it was real credit to them both for continuing to persevere with their training and attend this championship.
Over the week, Lucas competed in 7 events and Paige in 1 event. In these 8 events they both swam personal best times. Not only did they swim faster, but the improved performances meant that Lucas made finals in 2 events and Paige in her only event. In the finals, Lucas placed 8th in NZ in the 200m freestyle and 50m butterfly for 14-year-old boys and Paige 5th in NZ in the 50m breaststroke for 13-year-old girls. These fantastic results are reflection of all the hard work both Lucas and Paige have put into their training despite COVID interruptions, as well as the great coaching from the CHB Swim Club Coach, Alonso Fernandez Rodriguez.
Lucas and Paige would like to thank New World, Countdown, Kingfisher Gifts and Henry’s Pies for providing items and vouchers for their Easter raffle as well as everyone that brought tickets. They would also like to thank Grassroots Trust Central for the grant. All this support from our community made it possible for them to attend this event and was very much appreciated.

ViPS is the name we give to the awarding of students a grade that reflects how the College values are displayed in classes. To be “on ViPS” a student has to score greater than 81 (out of 100) This is a very high bar and students that score in the 70s are also doing very well. ViPS are calculated from an average of all of the students subjects and their Mentor and Dean, each teacher grades the students on a 1-10 scale. A student receiving a “6” from a teacher is considered a good score, all teachers use the same scale for every student, ViPS creates another opportunity for both teachers and students to consider how well they are displaying the College values. ViPS are completed twice in Terms 1,2 and 3 and once in Term 4. Each year students on ViPS are placed in a draw at Senior Prizegiving, one student is randomly selected and has won a laptop.
