Message from the Principal – 09 February 2023

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa

Many parents feel that once a child gets to college that they will not be able to assist them with work and progress through school.  As such, I am often asked by parents and caregivers how they can best support their children at college.  My advice is that it does not matter what you know, it matters more that you show an interest in your child’s efforts at school.  It can be as simple as asking what they did at school or how their day went, to coach their team at school or turning up when they are involved in school activities.

By coming to events at the school, such as our new parent evening next week, you are showing your child that their education is important to you. Encouraging your child to join in the many cultural and sporting opportunities we have on offer or turning up to watch them at school events.  What the children need to know is that their schooling matters to you and that when you are able to, you show that support by being involved.

You will have either received or be receiving contact from your children’s Mentors in the first few weeks of school.  This initial contact opens the way for ongoing communication between the home and school and we encourage parents to keep in contact.  Parents can also join our amazing PTA group of staff and parents who support the school to provide additional extras not covered by usual budgets.  We are also always looking for parents to coach, manage or be involved in sports to support the staff.

We appreciate any support you can give to the school and your children while they are at school. The College is part of the triangle of success for your children, so are parents and caregivers.  The most important part of that triangle is the student, who needs our support to be the best that they can be in the future.   We know that any child can be successful if they want to be, parent/caregiver support is vital to making that success become a reality.
