Message from the Principal – 13 February 2025
Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa
I would like to welcome all members of our College community to the 2025 school year. I hope you got the chance to spend time with family and enjoy an opportunity to relax over the new year. While the weather has been variable it was good to see nice days welcoming our students last week.
Our Year 13 students had their camp in Havelock North and it was a delight to see such a cohesive group of students enjoying their activities and developing their leadership skills. We know they will form a powerful and cohesive group of student leaders for 2025. Well done to the Dean, Mrs Breen and to Year 13 Mentors and staff who helped make the event so worthwhile. On Wednesday 5th February we welcomed new staff, our Year 9s and other new students. It was also excellent to see so many parents, caregivers and supporters at the pōhiri.
A focus this year will be on attendance as we are aware how important attending school is to the success of our students. Our target is for students to attend at a rate of at least 90%, which is achievable with five or fewer days absent over a term. While some absences cannot be avoided, we are encouraging parents to ensure students attend every day possible and to avoid days off that are not essential. Attendance will also be a key component of our Junior Certificate and our Year 11 Diploma.
Communication:
We do our best to communicate with our families. We have weekly newsletters sent out via e-mail, available on the school website and Facebook, also paper copies can be picked up from the office if needed. Our website has a wealth of information www.chbc.school.nz and the school App is also a very useful tool in getting the most up to date information. Our school diary is also a quick reference for information as well.
There will be times when we give students information to take home, mainly things that have to be signed off. At College, the students are expected to manage themselves and as such they need to ensure they pass information on when it is required to be completed. We encourage parents and caregivers to contact us if they have any concerns relating to their children. Your first point of contact will likely be your child’s Mentor who will be in contact early in the term, so please ask them any questions you may have as they may be able to help you.
The Year 9 and new parents evening is being held on Wednesday 19th February from 5:00pm for those able to attend.
School Values – R.I.C.E. - Respect. Integrity. Community. Excellence
Members of the College community will hear a lot about our school values again this year. Our values which are well explained in our school diary are our guide to what behaviours we expect at College. This is explained further in a Matrix at the front of the diary, pages 4 and 5.
SCHOOL VALUES ~ RESPECT ~ WHAKANUIA
“Haere taka mua, taka muri; kaua e whai”: Be a leader, not a follower.
Sometimes it takes a lot to stand up and to do the right thing if your peers are going to do something you know is wrong. People with integrity and respect try to do the right thing at all times, no matter what others think and no matter who is watching. Leaders step forward and step up.
Welcome to New Staff
This year we welcome three new staff in a variety of roles within the school. We welcome Ms Belinda Robertson from Rotorua Boys High School to teach English, Mrs Jillea Nolan is taking over from Mrs Harris who is on maternity leave teaching Hospitality, and Miss Jessica England who is joining us as a Teacher’s Aide.
We hope you all enjoy your time at our amazing kura and we look forward to your contribution to our school community.
