Beginnings Central
Hawke's Bay College opened in 1959 after a merger with Waipukurau and
Waipawa District High Schools. The first Principal was Mr Geoff Sharp.
The beginning roll of 347 first attended school on Tuesday 3rd February
1959.
Developments
The
College grew steadily over the first 25 years and substantial new
buildings were added to the existing Waipukurau DHS facilities. The
largest roll attained was in 1984 with 920 students. Mr Bob Foster took
over as Principal in 1970 and he led the school until retirement in
1983. Jeremy Ballantyne was Principal from 1983 to 2001. The fourth
(and current) Principal is Richard Schumacher.
Traditions
Many
of the features of the 21st Century Central Hawke's Bay College were
forged in first few years including Fryer Cup, House competitions and a
tradition of success and 'achieving with honour'.
